Learn to fly a glider

There’s nothing quite like the silence of soaring flight. If you’ve ever dreamed of gliding above the hills and valleys of the Inland Northwest — whether you’re coming from Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, or anywhere in between — the Spokane Soaring Society can make it happen.

Our FAA-certified flight instructors will guide you every step of the way, from your very first lesson to the moment you earn your wings.

What You’ll Learn

Our glider training program covers everything required to pass both the FAA written and practical examinations, including:

  • Soaring techniques — how to find and use lift to stay aloft and travel cross-country
  • Meteorology — understanding weather patterns and how they affect soaring conditions
  • Navigation — planning and executing flights safely and efficiently
  • Theory of flight — the aerodynamics behind how gliders fly

All ground and flight instruction is conducted under the supervision of our experienced, FAA-certified instructors, who will prepare you thoroughly for your written test, oral exam, and checkride.

Your Certificate

Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll earn your Private Pilot Certificate with a Glider rating — qualifying you to fly solo, carry passengers, and pursue the sport as far as your ambitions take you.

Ready to Get Started?

Whether you’re brand new to aviation or an already-certificated power pilot looking to add a glider rating, we’d love to talk through your goals and get you in the air.
